Settings

On the Mac, choose KML Explore ▸ Settings… (⌘,). The Settings window has three tabs, General, Map and Privacy, and one set of settings for every window: a change shows at once in each open file. On iPhone and iPad, tap the gear on the start screen, or Settings… in the File menu or the Map menu of an open map; the same settings are one list there, with Help and About KML Explore.

Each tab, and the list, ends with Reset to Defaults, which puts the units, coordinates, map style, names, web images and Remember Shown Layers back as they came, after a confirmation. It doesn’t forget remembered layers, and leaves My Location and the welcome window as they are.

Unlock KML Explore Pro… opens the purchase screen, or a line says Pro is unlocked; Restore Purchases finds a purchase made on another device. See KML Explore Pro.

Setting What it does
Units By Region (the measurement system set for the device; the default), Metric (km, ha) or US (mi, acres). Altitudes, nudge steps and Simplify’s tolerance are in meters or feet by this choice.
Area Automatic (the unit that suits the size in the system above), or one unit for every area: Acres, Hectares, Square Meters, Square Kilometers, Square Feet, Square Yards, Square Miles, Ares or Tsubo.
Length Automatic, or one unit for lengths, perimeters and legs: Meters, Kilometers, Feet, Yards, Miles or Nautical Miles.
Coordinates Decimal Degrees (the default), Degrees and Decimal Minutes, Degrees, Minutes, Seconds, UTM or MGRS. See Coordinates.

A tap on an area or a length on the map’s card changes Area and Length too. Units never change the file: it keeps its own numbers.

Setting What it does
Remember Shown Layers for Each File On (the default), a file opens with its layers as you left them on this device. The memory is kept here, never in the file. See the layer list.
Forget Shown Layers for … Files Forgets every file’s remembered layers, so each opens as the file sets it.
Setting What it does
Show the Welcome Window at Launch The welcome window when KML Explore opens and when the last window closes. On by default.
Setting What it does
Map Style Muted, Standard (the default), Satellite, Hybrid, Satellite 3D or Hybrid 3D; also in the Map menu (the toolbar’s Map button; on the Mac also the Map menu, ⌘1 to ⌘6). The 3D styles show terrain and buildings, and the earth as a globe when you zoom out to a continent.
Names on the Map The placemarks’ names under their pins, as many as fit. On by default.
Setting What it does
Load Images from the Web Off by default: icons, overlays and pictures in descriptions that a file links to on the web wait until you choose Load for that file, so a file from someone else can’t make the app contact a server by being opened. On, every file loads them. The Always in the question over the map, and Load Images from the Web in the Map menu, are this setting. See Images from the web.

On iPhone and iPad this section is Web Content.

Help ▸ KML Explore Guide opens this guide. About KML Explore shows the version and links to objectgraph.com. On the Mac, Help ▸ KML Explore Help (⌘?) opens the guide.

Not in Settings, but kept for next time: My Location on or off, the edit bar’s Lines, the nudge step, the Simplify tolerance, the export format, and the height of the Points table.
