KML Explore has no account, no ads and no analytics. Your KML and KMZ files are files on your device, or in iCloud Drive if you keep them there, and every measure, distance and coordinate is worked out on your device.
These features reach outside your device:
- The map: tiles and imagery come from Apple Maps for the area you view.
- Find a Place: what you type goes to Apple Maps for suggestions.
- Following paths and roads: with Walking, Cycling or Driving chosen in the edit bar, the two ends of each leg go to Apple Maps for directions. Straight Lines sends nothing.
- Directions on the card open Apple Maps with the placemark’s nearest point.
- Images from the web: icons, overlay images and pictures in balloons that a file links to are loaded from the servers the file names, and only after you choose Load for that file, or turn on Load Images from the Web in Settings. Until then, opening a file from someone else contacts no server of theirs. Scripts in descriptions never run.
- KML Explore Pro: the purchase goes through the App Store.
These stay on your device:
- Your location: used only while My Location is on and a map shows the dot, for the dot and the card’s distances. It is never sent anywhere and never written into a file.
- Your layer switches: kept on this device for each file, never in the file, until you choose Save Shown Layers to the File.
- Quick Look previews and file icons: drawn on the device from the file alone, with no map tiles and nothing from the web.
Network links in a file are not fetched.
